Mr. Goldsmith was born in Washington, D.C. in 1951. He received his primary and secondary education in the public schools of Fairfax County, Virginia. He received his BA (cum laude) in 1973 from Kenyon College and his JD in 1976 from Catholic University School of Law. Mr. Goldsmith worked for the Bill Digest Unit in the Congressional Research Service of the Library of Congress in 1977-78. Mr. Goldsmith served on active duty as a captain in the Air Force Judge Advocate General's Department during 1978-82. He performed duties involving military justice, government contracts, claims and related matters, specializing in administrative discharge actions. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal for outstanding performance of duty. Since 1982 Mr. Goldsmith has served as Acting Head and Head of the Discharge Review Section (DRS) of the Board for Correction of Naval Records. DRS reviews requests of current and former servicemembers for reinstatement in the service, recharacterization of discharges, removal of nonjudicial punishments, changes in reenlistment codes, and related matters. Mr. Goldsmith is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia (1976), the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces (1978), the United States Supreme Court (1993) and the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (1999). He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), Federal Bar Association (FBA), Judge Advocates Association (JAA) and the National Institute for Military Justice. He is past Chair of the ABA Committee on Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs, and past President of FBA's Pentagon Chapter. JAA Position: Board of Directors |
